Overview

The kindergarten health education standards for injury prevention and safety cover more topics than the preschool learning foundations, but both emphasize the importance of knowing and following safety rules at school, safety when traveling to and from school, and identifying trusted adults. Instruction and learning on injury prevention in Transitional Kindergarten focuses on safety at school and traveling to and from school.

Safety Strategies 

  • Relate to sounds they may have heard like sirens to teach about emergencies.
  • Play games like Red Light/Green Light and Simon Says. 
  • Practicing emergency procedures in class. 
  • Invite guest speakers like EMTs, firefighters, and bus drivers. 

Food Allergies 

  • Work with school nurse, staff, parents, and caregivers to develop an emergency response plan. 
  • Ensure confidentiality.

  • Limit number of rules to learn.

  • Inform parents about the school emergency procedures that the students are learning. 
  • Send home information on safe travel and how to develop a home/family plan for emergencies. 
  • Invite parents to school carnival, safety rodeo, or car seat demonstration and safety check. 
  • Sing safety songs at home.

Partnering with your School​​​

  • Collaborate with teachers, staff, expanded learning and higher elementary students to host a Safety Rodeo. Children ride tricycles, riding toys, and walk paths on the school playground lined with traffic signals. 
  • Participate in the school safety committee to ensure policies and procedures are appropriate for TK children.​
